Rhona Martin’s Olympic gold medal is stolen
THE Winter Olympic gold medal won by curler Rhona Martin has been stolen in a museum raid, it was revealed yesterday.
Police believe a three-man gang seen near Dumfries Museum on Wednesday night broke in after earlier viewing its collection.
They netted a haul worth £35,000, which included the 2002 Salt Lake City Games gold won by Ms Martin, left, and four team-mates.
A second Olympic curling gold, from the 1924 event in Chamonix, France, was also taken, along with silver medals, a Provost’s chain of office and a historic hallmarked casket from an exhibition of curling medals, trophies and memorabilia.
Please can I have it back. It means a lot to me and my family
Ms Martin – now Rhona Howie – said the medal was “of great sentimental value”.
She appealed to the thieves: “Please can I have it back. It means a lot to me and my family.”
Chief Inspector Steven Lowther said: “These items are distinctive and hold a huge amount of emotional attachment to the owners.
“We are keen to trace the three individuals seen running away from the museum”
