You're never too old for Christmas: A third of adults still hang stockings out for Santa
CHRISTMAS is less than a month away and come December 25 almost a third of adults in the UK will be hanging their stockings out ready for Santa Claus.
Research shows that 31 per cent of 18 to 55-year-olds hang the traditional Xmas decoration ready for Father Christmas to fill it with presents.
Fifteen per cent still write a letter to Santa Claus while almost one in five (18 per cent) visit Father Christmas's workshop to see him and his elves.
The study of 2,500 adults, compiled by the National Trust, also found 34 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds are given an advent calendar each year by their parents.
The research was released ahead of the National Trust launching their programme of Christmas events this weekend.
Tony Berry, National Trust director of visitor experience, said: "Our research highlights how important traditions are to families at Christmas time."
The vast majority of adults (90 per cent) said their fondest Christmas memory is getting to decorate the tree and turn on the lights.
The study also discovered traditions like opening stockings and getting an advent calendar are widely preferred to their office Christmas party.
Almost two thirds (64 per cent) added that the best Christmas dinner they've ever eaten was made by their mother.
Mr Berry added: "Whether carolling, making your own decorations or mince pie tasting, our Christmas activities are the perfect way to enjoy some of the nation's favourite customs - whatever your age."
