Julia Robert’s film inspires secretary to take on job bullies...and win
A BULLIED secretary studied for a law degree to sue her former bosses after being inspired by a film about legal campaigner Erin Brockovich.
Dyslexic Alex Gibson, 36, could not afford legal fees so she decided to learn all she could, like the real-life character played by Julia Roberts, and represent herself in court.
Yesterday Alex had a double celebration after winning her case at an eight-day employment tribunal in Bangor, North Wales, and gaining a first-class law degree.
Alex said she was forced out of her job after being made to take minutes despite her dyslexia. She said: “I’d complained through the usual channels about the bullying but got nowhere.
“My line manager said, ‘If you can’t deal with your colleagues’ perceptions of your disability then you need counselling’.”
Alex, who said she was also picked on for wearing an arm brace due to a biking accident, added: “The stress of work gave me anxiety problems. My hair fell out and I couldn’t sleep. I was distraught. But I got my inspiration from the Erin Brockovich film. She won against all the odds and I was determined to do the same.”
Alex, who was awarded a law degree with honours from Bangor University, alleged disability discrimination and harassment at the hearing.
She said: “It was utterly terrifying. I could barely get my words out but somehow I made my point successfully. I’m just happy I stood up to the bullies. I can finally say that no one will ever make me feel worthless again.”
She won compensation and is awaiting final settlement by the firm, which under the deal cannot be named.
Legal clerk Erin Brockovich won a multi-million pound lawsuit against a US corporation. Her story was filmed in 2000.
