Falkland Islands honour Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady, with her face on coins
THE FALKLAND ISLANDS are to commemorate the life of Baroness Thatcher on a set of coins.
They have been issued by Pobjoy Mint in Surrey, which Lady Thatcher visited in 2007 to launch coins commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict.
The coins have been minted on behalf of the Falklands, with another on behalf of Ascension Island.
The British South Atlantic territory was a vital staging post for the UK task force following Argentina’s invasion of the Falklands in 1982.
The Ascension coin features Lady Thatcher with Parliament and No 10 in the background and the words “Margaret Thatcher The Iron Lady”.
The Falkland coin features a more recent portrait, while another marks the islands’ recent “stay British” referendum.
The Queen is on the other side of each coin.
The cupronickel coins cost £12.46.
