Outcry as 'the man with no shame' NHS boss quits
NHS boss Sir David Nicholson said yesterday that he will retire in March next year.
But to the fury of health campaigners he will be taking his knighthood with him plus a generous pension pot and leaving A&E departments buckling under pressure.
The controversial chief executive oversaw the worst ever crisis in the health service.
For months Sir David, 56, defied calls for his resignation over the Mid Staffordshire scandal where appalling levels of care contributed to as many as 1,200 deaths.
Julie Bailey, of Cure The NHS, said: “Disappointed he isn’t going immediately but we know the man has no shame.”
Meanwhile A&E departments across the UK have scrapped four-hour waiting time targets as they face unsustainable demand, MPs were warned yesterday.
Dr Mike Clancy, of the College of Emergency Medicine, told them: “In the past year, the number of A&E patients who waited between four and 12 hours increased by 34,000.”
