First woman to conduct Last Night of the Proms
CONDUCTOR Marin Alsop will make history when she picks up the baton later this year to lead the flag-waving celebrations at the Last Night of the Proms.
She will be the first female conductor in Proms’ history at the Royal Albert Hall.
The violinist, who is also music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, will take charge of the famous finale in September which provides a patriotic climax to the annual Proms concerts.

This year also sees the Tardis come to the Royal Albert Hall as part of Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary. The Doctor Who Prom, which runs over two nights, will include scenes from the show soundtracked with music written by its teenage fans.
The concerts, which begin on July 12 and run for two months, include appearances by Nigel Kennedy, a complete performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle and a special urban music night starring Laura Mvula and Maverick Sabre.
Highlights of the concerts will be broadcast on BBC One, Two, Three and Four as well as on radio.
