Thatcher tributes row at FA
FOOTBALL chiefs were branded “disrespectful” yesterday for refusing to organise tributes to Baroness Thatcher.
Senior figures called for clubs to hold a minute’s silence to mark her death.
Others said players should wear black armbands.
But an FA source said there was “no precedent” for silences following the deaths of prime ministers and that it wanted matches to remain apolitical.
Mrs Thatcher’s former sports minister Richard Tracey hit back, saying: “Frankly I think it’s rather cheap that they decided not to show any sort of respect for her.”
Two top English rugby clubs – Saracens and Exeter – said they would hold a minute’s silence before their matches.
