Farmers plea to EU over dead sheep killed by severe weather
DESPERATE farmers last night urged the EU to let them bury hundreds of sheep and ponies that have died in heavy snow.
European law says the already hard-pressed farmers must send dead livestock to collection centres for disposal - at their own expense. Many of the bodies are in 40ft mountain snow drifts.
Gareth Wyn Jones, of Llanfairfechan, North Wales, said: "We are not allowed to bury them. It's a disaster."
We have a ridiculous situation
The Farmers' Union of Wales called for emergency cash aid and a relaxation of the rules.
Its president Emyr Jones warned some farmers faced losses of £10,000. He said: "We have a ridiculous situation."
