Blundering council chops down ancient tree leaving gaping hole in market square
A GAPING gap is all that remains of a proud sycamore that for 30 years offered shelter to shoppers in a historic market square.
In just minutes it fell victim to a contractor’s chainsaw as he felled the wrong tree, planted by schoolchildren at Hadleigh, Suffolk. Shopkeeper Jane Haylock said: “Three trees at the market were to be pruned, so when I heard the chainsaw I went out to look but it was too late. I was astounded.”
The local council has apologised for the blunder and said the contractor will be replacing the tree at his own expense.
