Caviar now on sale at Lidl for £1.49 a pot
CAVIAR is now on the menu for canny shoppers as discount supermarkets cater for luxury tastes.
Lidl has doubled its stock of Icelandic black caviar after sales almost quadrupled over Christmas.
At £1.49 for a 100g pot, pictured right, it is part of its range of quality delicacies.
The caviar roe comes from capelin, a small fish found in the Arctic, and costs a fraction of the price of traditional caviar from endangered sturgeon which can cost as much as £100 for the same amount.
However many retailers prefer to source caviar from sustainable fish like capelin.
Lidl spokesman Georgina O’Donnell said: “Most of us are feeling the pinch, but this gives you the opportunity to still enjoy high-quality food.”
