Scale of horsemeat scandal ‘a mystery’ to food safety experts
FOOD safety chiefs admit it is unlikely they will ever discover how many people have unwittingly eaten horse meat and the full extent of contamination is likely to remain a mystery.
Catherine Brown, head of the Food Standards Agency, said tests were just “a snapshot” so it was hard to work out how many batches were affected or how long horse meat had been used.
She added: “I think it is unlikely that we will ever know. It is shocking.”
Three men arrested in Aberystwyth and in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, were freed on bail as officials examined evidence from plants in Hull and Tottenham, north London.
