Brussels plot to curb Press freedom
BRUSSELS was accused last night of a plot to set up curbs on Press freedom.
A document calls for each European Union state to install media watchdogs with powers to strip journalists of their professional credentials and impose swingeing fines – all co-ordinated by Brussels.
The proposals are from a “high-level group on media freedom and pluralism” set up by European Commission vice president Neelie Kroes.
The EU hates a free Press.
The report said: “Countries should have independent media councils with a politically and culturally balanced and socially diverse membership. Such bodies would investigate complaints and should have real enforcement powers, such as the imposition of fines, orders for printed apologies or removal of journalistic status.”
Tory MP Philip Davies said: “The EU hates a free Press.”
Ukip leader Nigel Farage said: “Commissioner Neelie Kroes wants to send out the thought police. Well, don’t let her.”
Kroes’ spokesman said: “This is about sparking public debate.”
