Fury as war memorial is vandalised
FURIOUS villagers have condemned “mindless idiots” for “insulting our brave dead” after their war memorial was vandalised just days before Remembrance Sunday.
The memorial at Chesterton Park, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs, will be the hub of remembrance at the weekend for descendant families in the small mining village.
Blue paint thrown over the memorial has obscured the names of brave, local men who died serving their country in both world wars.
Yesterday villagers were hard at work cleaning off the paint in time for their Remembrance Sunday parade.
One resident, David Dean said: “This is totally disrespectful to those who died serving their country. It’s absolutely disgusting. Something needs to be done about these vandals.”
Staff from Newcastle council have also been at work cleaning up the memorial in time for Sunday, although the thick paint has proved difficult to remove.

Last year the Daily Express launched the Shop The Vile Vandals Crusade in a bid to raise the public’s awareness of the increasing attacks on Britain’s war memorials, churches and historic buildings.
