Kingfisher is a crack hunter of frozen food
STUNNING pictures show the moment a kingfisher catches a minnow in its beak after diving through a tiny hole in the ice.
Award-winning wildlife photographer Mark Hancox captured the images on the coldest day of the winter so far as temperatures plunged to -5C (23F).
One shot shows the bird diving into the water through a six-inch- wide gap in the frozen lake in Droitwich, Worcestershire.
A second later it emerges with a fish in its beak.
Mark, 48, said: “I was intrigued as to how kingfishers would cope with the icy weather. But one bird was fast as a flash. It was a dangerous tactic because it could easily have got trapped.”
