Lidl’s £12.99 bubbly top of the taste test
CHAMPAGNE from discount supermarket Lidl has been judged as tastier than expensive, luxury brands.
Lidl’s £12.99 bottle of Comte de Brismand is less than half the cost of a big-name labels such as Lanson, Moet & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot. Some of their bubbly costs more than £200 a bottle.
The best four tipples were all supermarket own brands costing less than £20.
Morrisons came out on top with its £19.99 The Best Brut scoring 84 per cent in a blind taste test for consumer group Which? The Co-operative and Waitrose champagne were also praised.
The report said: “Our experts praised Lidl’s simple fruity flavour and apple aromas.” It described Veuve Clicquot’s yellow label as “slightly cabbagey”.
Supermarket own-brand mince pies were also judged tastier than more expensive retailers.
