RETAILERS have launched an early festive price war to win struggling shoppers’ cash after a gloomy year of sales.
Shoppers can expect cut-price Christmas deals on food and gifts as High Street giants battle to avoid a repeat of last year’s disastrous Christmas sales.
Christmas puddings, selection boxes and stocking fillers reach the shelves of all the major supermarket chains this week.

Last year, sales were hit by low consumer confidence, rising online shopping and the freezing weather, which led to the High Street being quieter than ever during the run-up to Christmas. Now, with 94 days still to go until December 25, the big names have reduced prices to kick-start sales.
A spokesman for the Scottish Retail Consortium said: “Normally, the early arrival of Christmas goods is greeted with scepticism, but this year, they will help spread the cost.”

Earlier this week, the boss of Britain’s biggest toy makers described trading conditions as the bleakest in 40 years . Richard King, of Character Group, which produces Go Go Hamsters, said: “Its going to be a bloodbath.”
