An egg sells for £9m
THREE records were set yesterday when a Faberge egg made for the Rothschild family went for £8.98 million.
The gold and pink-coloured treasure, pictured right, which has a clock on its face, was the dearest ever Russian object and the most expensive timepiece ever sold. It also set a record for a Faberge work of art when it was bought by a private Russian buyer after a 10-minute bidding battle at Christie’s in London.
The auctioneer’s Alexis de Tiesenhausen said: “It has realised a record price reflecting its absolute quality.”
The egg is just one of 12 known to have been made for anyone other than the Russian royal family.
