Wetherspoons will pass on a tax cut from Thursday, June 25, the government has confirmed today.

The popular pub chain will cut the price of children's meal as part of a new government initiative to help people save money this summer. From today, June 25, the government’s Great British Summer Savings tax cut is now in effect, which will see VAT cut from 20% to 5% on a range of eligible activities across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The tax cut aims to help families enjoy weekend treats, days out and day trips this summer at a more affordable price to ease the impact on the cost of living from the Iran war. The temporary scheme will see the reduced VAT rate remain in place from June 25 until September 1 inclusive, and will apply across a range of attractions.

As well as a tax cut on tickets for things like theme parks, cinemas, theatres and soft play, the 5% VAT rate will also apply to the cost of children’s meals in restaurants and cafes - including at Wetherspoon pubs.

Wetherspoons is among the major businesses that have commitment to pass on the savings to customers, allowing pub goers to enjoy cheaper meals over the summer.

Other businesses include McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and Shepherd Neame pubs, among many more, according to HM Treasury.

Additionally, in England the scheme also includes free bus travel for children aged between five and 15 during the school holidays in August to make it easier and more affordable for people to get out and about.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: “I know the cost of living is a number one concern for families, and it can be even harder over the summer holidays when kids want to do things and money is tight. So we’re making it that bit easier for families to make memories together and enjoy the little treats - while giving a boost to businesses across the UK.

“This comes on top of support we’ve already put in place including freezing fuel duty, taking off £117 off energy bills, and freezing prescriptions and rail fares.

“We are able to do this because we have the right economic plan, resulting in the UK having the fastest growing economy in the G7.”

The government has confirmed that prices will be slashed between now and September 1 on all of the following:

  • Children’s menu meals served in restaurants for consumption on the premises

  • Children’s and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, shows and exhibitions

  • Admission tickets, for both children and adults, to a range of attractions, including amusement parks, fairs, museums, zoos, soft play centres, circuses, adventure parks, nature reserves, wildlife parks and observation attractions.

  • HM Treasury added that it will soon be launching a Great British Savings deal finder to help families discover summer offers from businesses in their area online.
