A woman was left utterly frightened by a live discovery in her new home. A kingsnake emerged from a boiler and "gave a shock" to the homeowner in Workington, Cumbria, who had recently moved in. Staff from Pet Encounter Cumbria were called to a property after the homeowner discovered the reptile in her kitchen at around 8pm on Monday.

The unexpected encounter prompted an immediate call to Pet Encounter Cumbria, an animal sanctuary that dispatches teams to rescue abandoned and stray creatures. Staff from the organisation arrived to collect the snake, which had clearly been living in the property for some time before the new resident took possession of the home.

It is now receiving care at the sanctuary and will "soon be needing to find its forever home".

Siobhan Harkness, from the sanctuary, said they had been informed that the previous occupant owned three snakes and it appeared they had been released before the house was vacated.

She added that the "other two were yet to make an appearance".

Harkness said the kingsnake was found to be "very hungry" and had suffered some damage to its scales.

She said: "No animal deserves to be treated like that...there are people who will help take in animals. Abandoning or releasing into the wild is never the answer. It is a lovely snake who will be needing to find its forever home as sadly we get loads of animals in for rehoming."
