Aldi is rolling out a new £14 rule in select UK stores from April in a major boost for its workers.

As of April 1, Aldi store assistants working in stores inside the M25 will be handed a pay rise, receiving a minimum of £14.88 per hour. Staff based in other parts of the UK will also benefit from a pay boost next month, with entry level pay rising to £13.50. These rates will rise to £14.47 nationally and £15.20 in London based on an employee’s length of service. The budget supermarket said the pay increases form part of a £42 million investment in staff pay this year, with the change set to benefit more than 28,000 hourly-paid store workers.

The increase is the second pay rise for Aldi teams this year and comes following an announcement in January of enhanced rates and extended maternity pay to 26 weeks at full pay.

Combined, these changes represent a £42 million investment in staff pay in 2026 alone, cementing Aldi’s commitment to being the grocery sector’s pay leader, with the new rates exceeding those of all other competitors.

Aldi is also the only other major supermarket to offer paid breaks to all staff, a benefit it says is worth approximately £1,500 per year to the average store worker.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our colleagues work incredibly hard to deliver exceptional value for our customers, and we’re rewarding that dedication with the highest pay in the sector.

“We’ve invested over £42 million in colleague pay this year because we know that every single member of Team Aldi is fundamental to our success and deserve nothing less.”

Aldi employs more than 45,000 colleagues across the UK and is continuing to expand, with plans to open 40 new stores this year as part of a £370 million investment programme. The supermarket is also investing an additional £300 million in upgrading and extending existing stores.

Aldi has also been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket for February, based on new research from consumer watchdog Which?.

Analysis based on a basket of 89 popular grocery items found that essentials at Aldi cost £24.37 less than at Tesco, while the same items were £27.62 more expensive at Sainsbury’s and £23.93 more at Morrisons.

The findings continue Aldi’s winning streak in 2026, having also topped the Which? charts in January and earning the title of ‘Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year 2025.
