Huge £20m boost for UK airport as it’s on brink of getting new train station
The major investment is set to boost jobs and transport in the region.
Teesside Airport is set to get a brand new £20m train station as part of a major £1bn boost to the region. Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen reiterated his commitment to replacing the current station as part of an autonomous tram network, which is set to be trialled at Teesside Airport later this year.
Services at the neglected station have been suspended since May 2022 due to what National Rail described as "urgent repairs to the railway". The Conservative mayor said: "This cash comes from the £1 billion first promised by Rishi Sunak back in 2023, only to be put on hold by the Labour Government once they took power. Thankfully, the Government has since seen sense and unpaused that funding."
Fifteen circular routes through the town centres of Darlington, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Stockton, and Hartlepool have also been proposed.
Houchen added: "This new station will make the airport even more accessible, and with better connections, we'll be making our airport even more attractive to new airlines and routes."
He said it was "another step in our plan to back local transport, create jobs, and boost pride in our area".
A £978m funding package was allocated to the Tees Valley after the HS2 rail project was scrapped, but months after election, Labour said the Tory commitments had been unfunded.
Mr Houchen said unlocking another £1billion of funding will allow the region to have access to the better roads, stations and transport links that it deserves.

He concluded: "This will not only make life easier every day for more people, but boost trade and supercharge the huge investments and projects we have coming online.
"From a cutting-edge tram network, to sorting out our stations and getting a new Tees Crossing done, this is a big step forward to getting even more spades in the ground and helping to deliver growth across our area".
Teesside International Airport said it recorded "huge growth in passenger numbers in 2024", and work is underway on a vast business park.
