Wayne Rooney: I’m quitting Manchester United to win medals
WAYNE Rooney confirmed he wants to quit Manchester United as he came under fire from fans last night.
The England striker hit back after Sir Alex Ferguson questioned his loyalty to the club.
Rooney, 24, accused United of lacking ambition and said he wanted to play for a club that could win trophies. He said he was “surprised” at Sir Alex’s comments but praised him as “a one-off and a genius”.
Rooney, who earns £90,000-a-week, spoke out as fans criticised him on internet blogs.
Some accuse his agent Paul Stretford of seeking a transfer in a bid to make him the world’s first £1million-a-month player.
Rooney, pictured yesterday, said: “My agent and I have had meetings with the club about a new contract. I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players.
“For me it’s all about winning trophies. I think the questions were justified.”
