Travellers’ camp wins a reprieve
TRAVELLERS camped on green-belt land have secured an injunction blocking their eviction.
Bulldozers were due to flatten the Hovefields site in Wickford, Essex, today. But Matilda Boswell has successfully applied for a judicial review – on grounds that the house Basildon Council offered her went against her tradition.
She claims it has to find her another caravan site. The council says it has fulfilled its duty.
The injunction will remain until a hearing next month but if a judge decides a full hearing is needed the travellers could be protected for months.
Jill Walsh, 57, who lives next to the site, said: “It’s very easy for judges and those in authority to make legal decisions from their warm offices. They do not live next door to a traveller site.”
