A woman was rushed to hospital after falling through the floor of Blackpool Central Pier, police have said.

Lancashire Police said it responded to a report the woman fell through the pier at about 4.30pm on Tuesday (August 6). The force said the woman was injured, but it isn't known how serious her injuries are.

Police said the pier was closed. Express.co.uk has approached pier owner, The Blackpool Pier Company, for comment.

A witness said he was walking on the beach below the pier with his children when he heard "a huge thud" next to him.

He told Manchester Evening News: "A lady ploughed to the floor, smashing through the Central Pier. I was absolutely terrified... I thought she was dead."

Central Pier is one of three piers in Blackpool. It was built in 1868 and lies between the resort town's North Pier and South Pier.

The pier is made up mainly of cast iron and has a wooden floor. A fire on Central Pier in July 2020 destroyed a fairground ride and damaged an engineering shed halfway down the structure, according to a BBC report.

That incident came just a couple of weeks after the pier reopened following its closure due to restrictions introduced during the Covid pandemic.

The pier's theatre was modernised in 1986, becoming "Maggie May’s" and a 108ft tall ferris wheel was added in 1990 after the attraction was strengthened.

Other attractions at the pier include dodgems, waltzers, an amusement centre and fishing for permit holders.
