UK riots: Rioter bitten on backside by police dog sobs in dock

A number of people have appeared in court in connection with disorder has seen police officers injured and buildings damaged.

A rioter who was bitten on the backside by a police dog cried in court as he admitted to violent disorder.

The convictions are part of the first wave of suspects arrested following mass riots across the country appearing in court for the first time.

Violence has erupted in several towns and cities, with more than 420 people arrested, following a knife attack on children attending a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in Southport, Merseyside, last Monday.

The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of three girls.

17-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana has been charged with three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder.

The rioter, 28-year-old Ryan Sheers, appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court and wept during the hearing as he admitted violent disorder.

Sheers, formerly a McDonald’s worker with no previous convictions, was emotional as he thanked District Judge Helen Cousins after she granted him bail.

He is set to appear before Teesside Crown Court for sentencing on September 2.

Footage from the riots in Hartlepool on Wednesday night showed a man attempting to break through a police cordon, shouting and refusing to move away before being bitten on the backside by a police dog.

In response to the widespread unrest, Sir Keir Starmer has called for the perpetrators to be named and shamed.

He announced the formation of a "standing army" of specialist police officers to crack down on rioting, stressing the need for swift and decisive action to restore order.
