The beautiful town minutes from major UK city that's 'like being in Spain'

This town embodies the same carefree lifestyle of many Spanish towns.

Poynton, a quaint town in Cheshire, England, has recently been drawing comparisons to sunny Spain.

With its unique blend of British charm and Mediterranean influences, Poynton offers a surprising and delightful experience for visitors and residents alike.

Poynton's transformation into a mini-Spain is not just about aesthetics, it’s about lifestyle.

The town’s centre, with its vibrant outdoor cafes, tapas bars, and community spirit, brings a slice of Spanish culture to northern England.

The bustling Poynton high street, often bustling with people enjoying al fresco dining, is reminiscent of a typical Spanish plaza.

That’s certainly what Paul, one of the town’s dedicated Council Support Community Officers seems to think, as he reels off a list of independent cafes, restaurants and bars that line the leafy Park Lane running through the town.

He says that come summer it's like being in Spain.

Beth Harris, who formerly worked in marketing, set up The Greener Grocer, an independent grocers and zero waste shop in the town last Easter.

She sells everything from organic fruit and veg and juices, to honey and fresh flowers, and says it has been popular with locals looking to shop near to home.

She told Manchester Evening News: “Through my own research I saw that there was a gap on the high street, and being positioned next to a butcher as well, it just made sense.

“Since I’ve opened there have been even more independents joining the fold too, like the bakery La Chouquette down the road and, because of the development, there’s more families moving in and demand for what I do.

“It’s a nice high street, there’s pretty much one of everything. Quite a lot of people around here don’t travel too far, so a lot of residents are very Poynton-centric, which means they like to shop, eat and drink out here.

“Ironically, one of the things that attracted me to the area is its proximity to Manchester. You feel like you’re out in the countryside but still have the best of both worlds, so it feels remote without actually being that way.”

“Ultimately though, there’s a very strong community feel here, and I think it helps people feel they are part of something.”

The culinary scene in Poynton plays a significant role in its Spanish comparison.

Local restaurants and cafes serve a variety of Mediterranean dishes, from traditional tapas to paella.

Establishments like “La Cueva,” a popular tapas bar, offer an authentic taste of Spain, with locals and tourists flocking to enjoy its ambiance and cuisine.

Much like Spanish towns, Poynton prides itself on its strong sense of community.

Regular events and festivals, often with a Mediterranean twist, foster a lively and inclusive atmosphere.

The Poynton Summerfest, for instance, features music, dance, and food that pay homage to Spanish traditions, making it a highlight of the local calendar.

Poynton’s natural beauty also draws parallels to Spain’s picturesque landscapes.

The town is surrounded by rolling hills and scenic countryside, ideal for outdoor activities akin to those enjoyed in Spain.

The Poynton Pool and local parks provide perfect spots for leisurely strolls and picnics, encouraging an outdoor lifestyle.

The warmth of Poynton’s residents adds to the town’s Spanish-like charm.

Known for their friendliness and hospitality, the locals contribute to the town’s welcoming atmosphere.

Whether it’s a friendly chat at the local market or community gatherings, the spirit of camaraderie is palpable, much like in Spanish towns.

Poynton has also embraced sustainable living, with initiatives that promote eco-friendly practices.

This progressive approach aligns with the modern, environmentally conscious lifestyle found in many parts of Spain.

The town’s efforts to create green spaces and support local businesses reflect a forward-thinking community.
