The Lieutenant-Colonel who was brutally stabbed in broad daylight just outside an Army barracks in Kent has been identified and pictured for the first time.

The victim, named locally as Lt Col Mark Teeton, is currently in a "serious but stable" condition in hospital following the shocking attack in Sally Port Gardens, 200 yards from Brompton Barracks in Gillingham on Tuesday evening.

After the frenzied attack saw Lt Col Teeton repeatedly stabbed, he was swiftly airlifted to hospital after his wife Eileen managed to flag down fellow soldiers and neighbours for assistance.

Aged in his 40s, he was reportedly in uniform when he was stabbed repeatedly, receiving up to 12 stab wounds.

Lt Col Teeton joined the British Army in 2000, according to a LinkedIn page, and was awarded a long service and good conduct medal in 2018.

He is based in Rochester, serving in multiple roles during two dozen years of service, including two years at the Ministry of Defence, during which time he was an engineering infrastructure planner and client's representative.

A tireless charity fundraiser, Mr Teeton ran 44 miles on the 80th anniversary of D-Day to raise money for the charity Combat Stress.

His fundraising page states: "In honour of our forefathers as well as current servicemen who have bravely fought to protect our way of life, I will be taking on the D-Day Challenge to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans."

"Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

"I’m taking on D-Day Challenge to help take vital strides towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need."

His fundraising target was £1,750 - but he actually raised £2,414.

Brompton Barracks is the headquarters of the British Army's 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment.

The attack happened at around 5.55pm on Tuesday, with the suspect being arrested around 25 minutes later.

Head of the Army, General Sir Roly Walker, yesterday condemned the stabbing as "horrific and unprovoked", while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was "shocked and appalled".

Anthony Esan, 24, was today remanded in custody after appearing in Medway Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder.
