For those that are nearing the end of their careers, they may be wondering whether they want to move abroad, relocate somewhere else in the UK, or stay put altogether.

Retirees who decide to move somewhere new in Britain will be hard-pressed to find a better retirement location than sunny Plymouth.

Rest Less, which has described itself as the "UK's fastest growing digital community for the over 50s with over one million members", has curated a list of the best places to retire in the UK, with Plymouth coming out on top.

Down in the south-west, the coastal city has all the amenities a retired couple or individual would need but offers a slower pace of life compared to many of the UK's major cities.

Plus, at around £241,000 on average, property prices in Plymouth are lower than the national average.

According to online estate agent Zoopla, terraced properties in Plymouth sell for an average price of £216,345.

Semi-detached homes go for an average of £260,397, with flats fetching £137,763.

Taken against the national average house price - £282,000 as of January 2024 - it's clear this city is a great value-for-money retirement option.

You'd be forgiven for assuming that given the below-average cost of a property, Plymouth would be run-down or lacking green space. Quite the opposite.

The city is dotted with shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, so there's plenty to get stuck into.

Plus it's surrounded by Areas of Oustanding Natural Beauty, National Parks and nature reserves.

To the south, the city keeps watch over the calm seas of Plymouth Sound - which is the UK’s first National Marine Park. To the north, it gazes out over Dartmoor’s dramatic tors.
