The UK's cheapest place to live is quiet town where homes sell for as little as £130k
The quaint town is the cheapest place to live in the UK, however, locals say there is more than meets the eye.
A north east town has been named the budget capital where homes sell for as little as £130,000.
Shildon is just 13 miles outside of Durham, putting it in the perfect position for city commuters who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle after work.
The quaint town boasts plenty of green space and good access to nearby urban settlements.
Church Street, the main street in town, is full of small local independent businesses, a rarity in a country where high streets are filled with retail chains. The town also has a variety of restaurants, cafés, pubs, and nearby attractions like Resorts World, offering shopping, cinema, bowling, and dining options.

Shildon offers diverse housing options, from modern flats to Victorian and Edwardian houses and affordable 1930s semi-detached properties.
As of September 2023 the average house cost was £129,204 while rent for an average one-bedroom flat is £465 as of December 2023.
However, some people have managed to grab a property for much less.
Last year, a one-bedroom terraced house with off-street parking just off the high street was bought for just £35,000.
A bargain on the surface, some locals quickly warned that even that was too high a price to pay to live in the area.

One resident, Sandra Comrie, 58, previously told The Sun: "The crime and anti-social behaviour around here is crazy.
"I came downstairs the other day to find a bloke in my kitchen, he'd just walked through the back door.
"He told me he was only letting me know my door was open but I knew he was trying to find stuff to pinch and I yelled at him to get out. The best thing you can do in this town is keep yourself to yourself and hope to stay safe, but sometimes they'll come for you anyway.
"True, it's cheap, but there's a reason for that — no one wants to live here. I pay £375 a month for a two-bedroom terrace, you wouldn't get that in most places."
