M62 traffic LIVE: Chaos on major UK motorway after horror double lorry crash

The M62 is currently shut between Junction 9 at Warrington and Junction 8 at Buttonwood as emergency services respond to the crash.

Drivers are being asked to take extra time to travel after National Highways confirmed the M62 is now partially shut.

The major motorway is closed between J9 (Warrington) and J8 (Burtonwood) after two lorries and a car were involved in a "serious" crash.

Drivers are being advised to exit the M62 westbound and Junction 9 and take the first exit at the roundabout, following the A49 southbound until the A574 roundabout.

They should then take the third exit and follow the A574 roundabout until the Westbrook roundabout, where they should take the second exit and Westbrook Way until the Burtonwood Road roundabout.

Once there, they will be able to rejoin the M62 westbound at J8 by taking the fourth exit and following directions for Burtonwood Road.

Congestion is still back to J10

Congestion is back to J10 on the westbound side of the M62. Long delays remain due to the closure between J9 and J7.

There are also queues on the northbound M6 leading up to the junction with the M62 and past the incident to New Boston.

Police have left the M62 after morning's three-vehicle crash

Cheshire Police have left scene six hours after this morning's three-vehicle crash on the M62.

National Highways contractors are in the final stages of the clean up process.

The road remains closed and drivers are told to expect delays.

The repairs have been carried out on the eastbound side. Westbound of the M62 remains SHUT from J9 to J7.

Motorway to remain closed into the afternoon

National Highways said: "Drivers in the North West are advised that a section of the M62 is expected to remain closed into this afternoon following a serious collision in Cheshire.

"National Highways was alerted to the collision involving one car and two HGVs on the westbound carriageway between Junctions 9 (Warrington) and 8 (Burtonwood) at 5.30am on Thursday, 11 July 2024.

"Emergency services are at the scene and work to recover the vehicles underway, but this is expected to take considerable time.

"Heavy congestion is likely, and drivers are advised to find an alternative route.

"The motorway has been closed westbound between Junction 9 (Warrington) and Junction 7 (Rainhill Stoops)."

Not confirmed if there have been any injuries

National Highways said the crash on the M62 westbound earlier involved two lorries and a car.

It has not yet been confirmed whether anyone has been left seriously injured.

Police begin investigation into crash

Cheshire Roads Police are beginning a "comprehensive investigation and complex recovery operation", according to National Highways.

There are currently delays of 45 minutes with traffic being turned around due to the road remaining shut more than three hours after the incident.

Trapped traffic being released

Our travel partner, INRIX, said: "M62 Westbound closed, severe delays due to accident, two lorries and a car involved from J9 A49 Newton Road (Winwick) to J7 A57 Warrington Road (Rainhill Stoops).

"Congestion to J6 (M57 Tarbock Island) for the eastbound traffic, and back past J10 (M6 Croft Interchange) for westbound. Also affecting routes through Warrington, Winwick, Bold Heath and northbound traffic on the M6 up to J23 (Haydock).

"One lane remains closed on the eastbound carriageway due to an earlier accident. Ongoing since around 05:00 this morning. Cameras show that trapped traffic is currently being released.

"Diversion - Via the A49 Winwick Road through Warrington then the A57 Warrington Road through Great Sankey to the Rainhill Stoops Interchange to re-join at J7."

There are 'severe delays' on the M62 westbound this morning after the crash.

The closure is expected to remain in place through the morning as emergency crews continue to work on the scene.

People 'trapped' in vehicles

Cheshire Fire and Rescue confirmed they are on the scene of the crash.

They confirmed the incident involved two lorries and a car.

Crews are working to rescue people trapped at the scene, a spokesperson added.

More lanes on the M62 closed

There is now also a lane closure in place on the eastbound side of the M62 between J7 and J8.

The entrance sliproad at J8 westbound will also remain shut for emergency crews at the scene.
