Passengers on board a British Airways flight say they have endured the 'flight from hell' - after the aircraft was struck by lightning.

BA919, flying from Stuttgart, Germany, to Heathrow, was hit by lightning on Sunday afternoon.

The aircraft, which was due to land at Heathrow at 1.40pm, was instead diverted to Gatwick.

One person, whose son and grandson were on board, claimed it was the 'flight from hell'

A passenger captured a photo of lightning outside - and praised the flight's crew.

They added:  "The crew were amazing when our flight got struck by lightning on the approach to Heathrow.

"It was shocking. The flight had to divert to Gatwick."

A British Airways spokesperson told the Mail:  "BA919 diverted to Gatwick earlier this afternoon due to weather related conditions in the region.

"The flight landed just before 2pm. Customers were driven from Gatwick to Heathrow."

A number of flights have been reportedly hit by lightning in the area today.

A passenger on a different flight to Heathrow said: "Just got struck by lightning on the approach into Heathrow.

"It entered just underneath the flight deck and left the tail - we saw it shoot through the cabin.

"I’d heard of lighting travelling through the cabin before but it was my first time seeing it in real life."
