This is the heartbreaking first picture of a seven-month-old baby girl who was mauled to death by her family's pet dog in Coventry.

The victim, seven-month-old Elle Doherty, sustained serious head injuries from the family's Belgian Malinois.

West Midlands Police responded to an incident at a property on Shorncliffe Road in Coventry shortly after 3pm on Sunday 16 June. Despite receiving immediate treatment from paramedics and being rushed to the hospital, Elle died shortly after.

The family's pet dog was removed from the home and "humanely destroyed", according to authorities.

Following a police investigation, it was determined that no criminal offenses had been committed, and a file is being prepared for a coroner's inquest.

In a statement, police said: "Following a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the death of a baby who tragically died after being bitten by a pet dog at a home in Coventry, detectives are now satisfied there have been no criminal offences. We were called to a property at Shorncliffe Road shortly after 3pm on Sunday. Together with our ambulance colleagues we arrived within minutes."

The police have updated Elle's family and are now preparing a file for the coroner.

"Our thoughts remain with the family at this tragic time, and they have now asked to be left to grieve in private", they added to their statement.
