A former gangster who shared a prison cell with Ronnie Kray has revealed a chilling incident that demonstrated the notorious criminal's unpredictable nature.

The violent episode unfolded in Parkhurst Prison, as recounted by Ronnie Field, a retired bank robber who had a friendly relationship with the infamous crime figures.

Field confessed that while many inmates feared the twins, he was particularly terrified of the volatile Ronnie, who could become aggressive without warning.

Field, now 77, who once terrorised banks, shops and bookmakers with a shotgun, crossed paths with the infamous Kray family after being introduced by underworld boss Joey Pyle.

Recalling the incident, the ex-gangster described how prisoners were served their evening tea in a steel bucket.

On the fateful night, a group of convicts at the Isle of Wight prison were gathered in the TV room when another inmate entered with the evening brews. When it came to serving Kray's tea, the prisoner foolishly only filled his cup halfway.

The hardened criminal glanced at his drink and calmly asked the inmate for the bucket before pouring the boiling hot tea over his head.

Field recalled that Reggie Kray (Ronnie's twin brother), who was also present, questioned his brother about his actions, reminding him they "only have half a cup", to which his brother responded: "Yeah, but he's new; he didn't know that.", reports the Mirror.

He recounted that Ronnie was prone to explosive outbursts, always ready to "take offence". Delving into the Kray twins' dynamics on the Eventful Lives Podcast, Field contrasted Charlie's temperament with that of his notorious brothers: "Completely different."

"Charlie, well, he was a good boxer; he could have a fight, but he wouldn't shoot no one or stick a glass in their face or anything like that. He was more intelligent than the twins - be honest, the twins were just thugs, really, and Ronnie used to really like hurting people.

"Reggie did, but he never showed it so much. If you fell out with Ronnie, he'd chin ya there and then."

Field went on to describe Reggie's more calculated approach: "Reg wouldn't, he'd hang about, maybe two or three days later, come up behind ya in a club and stab ya."

He labelled them the "governors", noting that with Ronnie, constant vigilance was required as he could snap at the "drop of a hat" over "anything."

Field added: "He don't wanna listen to ya; he just wants to hurt ya."

Through his criminal activities, Field amassed considerable wealth but paid the price with his freedom, being incarcerated three times and spending a total of 25 years in prison.

His final sentence was related to a collaboration with Charlie Kray in a significant cocaine operation, allegedly valued at £39million, which resulted in a nine-year imprisonment.
