The boss of Wetherspoons has revealed the real reason beer in his chain of pubs throughout the UK is so cheap.

Sir Tim Martin revealed the reason it is able to sell beer at such low prices was because it bought and sold in bigger quantities than anyone else.

The Wetherspoons boss made the revelation in an interview with The Sun ahead of the launch of 50 ‘Super Spoons’ later this year.

He explained “We’ve got bigger pubs than average and we’ve got very long-term relationships with our beer suppliers, so they know that we’re not buying it for three months or six months.

"Our average sales per pub are probably far more than double most pubs."

Significant sales of beer and other beverages have helped Wetherspoons recover from the economic blow of the pandemic when thousands of bars and restaurants were forced to shut.

In recent weeks, Sir Tm has revealed one of the reasons for Wetherspoons' strong recovery from the pandemic has been an increase in the popularity of Guinness among younger punters.

The Mirror reported that Sir Tim commented: "The gods of fashion have smiled upon Guinness, previously consumed by blokes my age, but now widely adopted by younger generations.

"The company expects profits in the current financial year to be towards the top of market expectations."

As part of a continued determination to grow in the future, the pub chain is also in the process of constructing a £5m supersized pub in Newcastle.

Also included in the plans is a 26-room hotel alongside the bar which will be an extension of the existing Mile Castle Wetherspoons.

Sir Tm said: "The investment highlights our commitment to the pub, its customers and staff, as well as the city of Newcastle.

"The Mile Castle is an extremely popular pub and we are confident that our customers will welcome the work being undertaken in the pub as well as the creation of our first hotel in the city.”

The pub is set to close on June 24 before it reopens on September 3 with the hotel opening on November 12.
