Canning Town fire: London tower block engulfed by blaze as smoke seen for miles

A video from the scene showed black smoke filling the sky in east London - the fire is now said to be under control but seven people have been rushed to hospital.

Black smoke plumes from high-rise buildings in Canning Town

A large fire broke out at a buiding under construction in east London on Tuesday morning, with a huge cloud of smoke filling the sky.

As many as 70 firefighters were at the scene in Canning Town after reports of the blaze started to come in at around 8.23am. 

The London Fire Brigade said in an incident update that the fire "was located in a construction site consisting of 10 floors, where a ground floor commercial unit was alight. 

"One of the Brigade's 64m ladders deployed to the scene as part of our response, and one person was rescued by firefighters using 13.5 metre ladder. There are no reports of any injuries at this time."

Dramatic pictures and videos on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke, with horrified bystanders watching on. At least seven people were rushed to hospital as a result of smoke inhalation, according to reports.

The fire reportedly broke out in two separate areas of the Hallsville Quarter development, minutes from Canning Town station.

The building site is part of a £3.7 billion Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme.

Earlier a spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: "Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters are responding to a fire near Silvertown Way in Canning Town. Please avoid the area as we respond. More information to follow."

In their subsequent update, the LFB said crews had the incident under control by 0936.

Firefighters from Plaistow, Poplar, East Ham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, the fire department said.

Fire now under control - officials

The fire is now under control, the London Fire Brigade says.

In an incident updated on their website, officials said crews "had the incident under control by 9.36am".

They added: "Firefighters from Plaistow, Poplar, East Ham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene."

The LFB be said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

'Not what I was expecting to see on the school run'

The local woman who reported that the Hallsville Quarter building site was affected wrote on X that it was "not what I was expecting to see on the school run".

Social media users stunned by 'ominous scene' in east London

Local residents and commuters have shared striking footage of the fire, with one person writing: "Ominous scene this morning in Canning Town but police and firemen out in force, making us all feel safe.

"Looks like only the building sites are affected," they added.

No injuries reported - Met

So far, no injuries have been reported, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.

Dozens of firefighters are on the scene after the blaze broke out this morning.

Roads closed as fire crews tackle blaze

A1011 Silvertown Way has been closed in both directions between the A13 (Canning Town Flyover) and Hallsville Road following the blaze.

A detour is in effect for bus routes 147, 330 and 474.

Footage posted on social media shows huge plumes of black smoke rising about the Canning Town skyline.

Firefighters are on the scene following a blaze near Silvertown Way.

No injuries have been reported so far.
