The plume of smoke is thought to be coming from industrial units in the area, with a cordon put in place by emergency services
Black smoke billows near St Mary's Stadium in Southampton
Shocking new footage has shown black smoke billowing from a building just meters away from Southampton's St Mary's football stadium.
The plume of smoke is thought to be coming from the former Greenhams building on Southampton's Central Industrial Estate, with a cordon put in place by emergency services.
Roads surrounding the area have been closed and folk living nearby have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke from the fire which broke out just after 1pm.
Drivers have been urged to avoid the area "to allow movements of emergency vehicles" according to Hampshire fire service.
Southampton FC are due to take on Preston at the stadium in a Championship match due to kick off in a few hours' time at 7.45pm.
There has been no word on whether the match will be cancelled.
Eight fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms and "other specialist" vehicles are currently on the scene, with officials using a loudspeaker to tell people to leave the scene.
Police are also on the scene enforcing road closures and attempting to make the scene safe.
Reports from the BBC suggest the roof of the building has collapsed with flames coming out of blown out windows.
Hope everyone is ok but could put the game in jeopardy later? @SouthamptonFC pic.twitter.com/C60czSQVLs
