Armed police warned locals 'stay inside' after person 'spotted carrying handgun' in street
Police have confirmed an arrest has been made after people were told to stay in their homes after an incident earlier today in Cheadle.
Armed police and dog units today swarmed a town centre amid reports of 'a person with a handgun'. Residents were urged to remain in their homes after the incident in High Street, Cheadle, Greater Manchester, this afternoon.
The force has now confirmed a 69-year-old is in custody as an investigation into the alleged incident continues.
The man from Cheadle has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear/violence.
A spokesman told StokeonTrentLive: "We went to High Street, Cheadle, at 4.20pm today (December 17) following reports of a man with a firearm.
"A man was found by officers.A 69-year-old man, from Cheadle, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear/violence.
"He remains in custody and inquiries are ongoing. We would like to thank the public for their assistance."
An image showed at least four armed officers at the scene but witnesses say police have left the scene on High Street.
