Shadwell: Fire breaks out at block of flats
A huge fire has broken out in a high rise block of flats in east London.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) told Express.co.uk that 12 fire engines are on the scene after the service received over 65 calls about the fire from 12.16pm.
The fire is understood to be in a block of flats on Hindmarsh Close in Shadwell, near Whitechapel.
At least 80 firefighters are tackling the blaze, and are using a 64-metre tall ladder.
LFB advised anyone nearby to avoid the area, and say the fire was brought under control by 1.26pm.
Most of the 14th floor of the 24-storey block was caught up in the fire.
Road closures are in place, and those living nearby have been advised to keep windows and doors closed.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and is under investigation.
Station Commander Steve Irvine, who is at the scene, said: "A respite centre has been set up locally for those who have been affected by the fire and we are working with local partners.
"Road closures remain in place in the area and we’d ask that people continue to avoid the area at this time."
