Dogs need their teeth brushed every day
DOGS need their teeth brushed every day just like humans to prevent serious health problems, a leading vet has warned.
One in four dogs in Britain – more than two million pooches – have bad teeth because well-meaning owners pamper them with sugary and fatty treats, said a survey by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals.
Curry, chips and cheese are some of the bizarre titbits which owners admit to giving their pets. Other dogs are stuffed with chocolate, even though it is poisonous to them.
But gum disease can also trigger problems in other parts of the body such as the kidneys and heart, said Sean Wensley, a senior PDSA vet.
“Food affects animals the same as humans so you should brush your pet’s teeth every day,” he added. “With a good diet and oral hygiene, a dog’s teeth should last a lifetime.”
