It is understood the victim was surrounded by a gang of teenage boys in school uniform while a group of girls, also in uniform, looked on. The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene, but died later in hospital.
The attack took place on Thursday at around 5.20pm and the suspects, aged between 14 and 17, were arrested shortly afterwards. They remained in custody yesterday.
Witness John Angeli, 47, from Haywards Heath, West Sussex, said: “There was a very tense situation outside WH Smith – there was a big kerfuffle with about 10 or 15 kids all screaming. They were all in uniform.”
Detective Superintendent Ashley Croft, of the British Transport Police, said: “This was a reckless act of violence that has resulted in a teenager tragically losing his life.”
