Storm over anti-terror cuts
GORDON Brown was facing mounting pressure last night to explain why the Government has decided to slash funding for the war on terror.
A political storm erupted after Baroness Kinnock revealed the Foreign Office had been forced to cut counter-terrorism programmes in Pakistan because of a £110million budget deficit created by a fall in the value of sterling. Projects to prevent the radicalisation of Muslim youths had been hit, she warned.
Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth yesterday admitted that the exchange rate was causing difficulties for both his department and the Foreign Office.
But Foreign Secretary David Miliband said: “The truth is that our spend on counter-terrorism in Pakistan is going up.”
