Gordon Brown dons flak jacket as he meets the troops
GORDON Brown looked more embattled than usual yesterday when he made a surprise visit to the troops in Afghanistan.
The Prime Minister was wearing a protective helmet and body armour as he arrived at “Little Heathrow” – a shed at Kandahar airfield.
He became the first Prime Minister since Winston Churchill to bed-down overnight in a combat zone. But his appearance contrasted with his predecessor Tony Blair, who avoided being seen in military protective clothing on visits he made to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mr Brown said: “I wanted to be here with the troops to thank them for what they are doing. I wanted to see what it was like working with them.”
