Ministry of Defence set aside £60m staff bonuses
THE Ministry of Defence has set aside almost £60million for staff bonuses, figures showed last night.
Junior ministry workers have been allocated a year-end bonus pot worth almost £50million while their bosses could enjoy a share of more than £1.6million, Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said.
And more than £7million has been earmarked for “special bonus payments” to staff during 2009-10. In a written Commons answer to Tory Grant Shapps, Mr Ainsworth said the total bonus pot for 2009-10 adds up to £58,374,000.
Gordon Brown pledged to examine bonuses at the MoD after it emerged this month that civil servants have been paid £47million so far this year.
However the MoD insisted the majority of its staff earn less than £20,000 a year and said bonuses would average less than £1,000.
