We must all wear a face mask in public, says expert
EVERYONE should cover their face, especially when indoors or in an enclosed public space, and never leave home without one, according to the president of the Royal Society.
Coronavirus: WHO advise on use of face masks in public spaces
Nobel Prize-winner Sir Venki Ramakrishnan, head of the National Academy of Science, said: "There are no silver bullets. But alongside hand-washing and physical distancing, we need everyone to start wearing face coverings, particularly where physical distancing is often not possible. The UK is way behind other countries in wearing masks.
"So as we lift lockdown and people increasingly interact with each other we need to use every tool we have to reduce the risk of a second wave of infection. Not wearing a face covering increases the risk for everyone, from NHS workers to your grandmother."
In late April, only about 25 percent of Britons wore face coverings, compared to 83.4 percent in Italy, 65.8 percent in the US and 63.8 percent in Spain, according to a report.
Separate research suggests masks or face coverings could provide protection to both the wearer and those around them.
