NHS workers: How many NHS workers have died?
THE NHS is made-up of the frontline workers protecting the nation from coronavirus - an "invisible enemy" which is sweeping across the country killing thousands. But how many NHS workers have died during the fight?
Captain Tom Moore: Dan Walker apologises for ‘interrupting’
The NHS was sincerely thanked by Britons up and down the country for the fourth time on Thursday as healthcare workers continue to lead the fight against coronavirus. Healthcare workers are, however, paying a heavy price for their bravery, with many fearing for their lives and struggling with limited supplies of protective equipment. But just how many NHS workers have died so far?
Several NHS workers have already lost their lives after contracting the disease from patients.
And the number is likely to soar as the pandemic continues to spread.
The rising tally of lost lives has prompted widespread concern, with ministers facing increasing pressure for the lags in testing in the UK compared to other countries.
A number of NHS and private healthcare staff including surgeons, nurses, porters and retired GPs have sadly died.

On Thursday, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab who is deputising for Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the lockdown in Britain would be extended by “at least” three weeks.
Mr Raab said: “There is light at the end of the tunnel but we are now at both a delicate and a dangerous stage in this pandemic.
"If we rush to relax the measures that we have in place we would risk wasting all the sacrifices and all the progress that has been made.
"That would risk a quick return to another lockdown with all the threat to life that a second peak to the virus would bring and all the economic damage that a second lockdown would carry."
The Government announced at additional 596 deaths on Sunday, taking the total to 16,060.
The lockdown restrictions mean people are commanded to stay at home, forcing businesses to close and preventing public gatherings of more than two people.
However, NHS workers are designated key workers, meaning they need to continue working as their work is critical to the coronavirus response.
The extension means the lockdown will continue until at least May 7, with Mr Raab hinting it may last longer.
Mr Raab said the following five things must happen for the lockdown to be lifted, including:
- Ensuring the NHS can cope
- A sustained and consistent drop in the daily death rate to ensure the peak has passed
- The infection rate decreases to manageable levels
- Testing capacity and PPE is in hand to meet supply for future demand
- No risk of a second peak.

How many NHS workers have died?
The Government has said there have been 27 verified deaths of NHS staff during the pandemic.
However, a number of other staff including retired staff who returned to assist with the frontline pandemic response have died.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the grim total has risen from 19 since the last time he gave an update on the weekend.
The devastating losses include a 28-year-old pregnant nurse who died on Sunday, while her baby daughter was delivered successfully by caesarean section.
The real total is known to be much higher than the 27 verified deaths, but official figures often lag behind.
