Cardiff streets evacuated as bomb disposal team rush to the scene – Roads in lockdown
POLICE have sent a bomb disposal team to Penarth, near Cardiff, following the discovery of a suspected military ordnance.
Penarth: Police close off road after suspected ordnance discovery
South Wales Police have closed a section of Barry Road, Cogan, to allow a bomb disposal team to attend an address in Penarth, a small town four miles southwest of Cardiff city centre. A number of neighbouring properties have also been evacuated as a precautionary measure. It is not yet known what military item has been discovered, but it could be heavy munitions, artillery or an unexploded bomb.
One social media user has claimed the find was a WW2 bomb.
They wrote on Twitter: "Someone found a WW2 bomb on Penarth beach, took it home and *then* called the police."
The road closure, along Barry Road between the junction with Penarth Road and the turning into Llandough, is causing severe traffic delays of over an hour.
Penarth Nub News' editor, Zola Hargreaves, who was evacuated from her home, said: ''The police knocked on our door and said we were being evacuated due to a device found a couple of doors down.
''We have all been asked to remain inside Cogan Leisure Centre whilst it is dealt with.
''It's heightened police wise but otherwise, it seems pretty calm in the centre.
''My home is about halfway up on Andrew Road.''
Police have said residents can expect to be able to return to their homes in about an hour.
A South Wales Police spokeswoman said Barry Road reopened at about 9.10pm on Monday.
All officers now appear to have left the scene.
