Dewsbury: Firefighters on scene after car crashes into pub
The incident reopens the debate about older drivers just over a week after the 97-year-old Duke of Edinburgh flipped the car he was driving.
Another witness described how she overtook the grey Saab as it was parked before hearing the smash.
They said: “He was parked there then I overtook him and I went up there.
“The next minute I know, I heard a crash.
“I hope he’s alright.”
A further witness explained they thought the driver was performing a manoeuvre when he lost control.
They said: "He must have swung to do a u-turn and must have ended up straight into the Wetherspoon’s”.
Firefighters freed the man from his estate car and it is not believed he was seriously injured.
No other injuries have been reported.
The pub, which was open at the time, has been closed indefinitely but local residents are still turning up expecting a lunchtime pint.
A spokesperson for Wetherspoon’s confirmed it was not known when The Time Piece will reopen.
They said: “There appears to have been an accident.
“We will let the police conduct their investigations.
“The pub will be closed for the foreseeable future until we have had the appropriate structural surveys done to make sure it is safe and secure.”
Meanwhile the police confirmed the elderly person was not injured.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “At 9.38am today police received a report of a vehicle which had crashed into The Time Piece pub in Northgate, Dewsbury.
“Emergency services attended and found a grey Saab estate car had gone into the building.
“The elderly driver of the car is receiving medical treatment at the scene, but is not thought to be seriously injured.
“No other injuries have been reported and the vehicle has now been removed.”
