Vince Cable SHOCKS John Humphrys with his second Brexit referendum timeline
BREXIT could be delayed for an extra five months if Theresa May agreed to Vince Cable's and pro-Remain MPs' proposal of tabling a second referendum after an extension of Article 50.
Brexit: Vince Cable proposes to delay Brexit for SIX months
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, the Liberal Democrats leader claimed to have set out a timetable proposing the "sensible way forward" to solve the current political deadlock. Sir Vince argued an extension of Article 50 would be the step one of his masterplans to delay Brexit until June when he claimed he would hold a second public vote on the issue.
He said: “At the moment, Theresa May's proposal has literally zero possibilities of proceeding.
“If you do have a referendum she has one of two options the other being to remain in the European Union.
“She has a 50/50 chance, that’s a better position than she is in at the moment.
“We have set out a timetable actually at the beginning of the week.
We’re probably talking about a vote at the end of May, June
“We’re probably talking about a vote at the end of May, June. Something at that time.
“There are a lot of parameters around this.
“This is exactly the kind of thing that is negotiable and it’s concerned with the practicalities.
“If we can get into that kind of discussion, I think we’ll be making real progress.”
Brexit: Rees-Mogg says Barnier is 'soreheaded' from deal failure
It comes after Theresa May invited senior members of opposition parties to help her come up with a cross-party solution to the Brexit deadlock.
Conservative Party chairman Brandon Lewis said ministers wanted to be "very open-minded" in their talks with MPs on the way forward.
However, he said the Government was determined that the UK should be able to conduct an independent trade policy after leaving the EU.
The Tory MP claimed Theresa May's Government will rule out any permanent customs union with the European Union as well as dismissing calls for a second referendum.
