Evacuation following Heywood BOMB THREAT - Controlled explosion carried out
AN EVACUATION has taken place in Heywood, near Manchester, as authorities deal with reports of a suspect device.
Local journalists report a controlled explosion has taken place. Police were called shortly after 7.00pm to a property on Bury Old Road. The street was evacuated and a 100 metre no-go barrier was established as police investigated the scene.
Greater Manchester Police insisted there was “no wider threat to the community”.
A Manchester Evening News reporter said on Twitter: “A bomb disposal unit has just performed a controlled explosion on a nearby field.
“The explosion made a bang and sounded like a firework.”
The cordon has largely been lifted, with residents allowed to return to their homes.

Only a small part of Bury Old Road remains closed off by police.
Local resident James Nathaniel told Manchester Evening News: “Everyone is just stood outside on the road. It’s a fairly quiet area.
“There’s a lot of speculation going on outside and on social media about what it might be.”
Greater Manchester Police earlier commented: “Bomb disposal officers have made an assessment of the device found at a property on Bury Old Road in Heywood.
“The devise will be safely removed from the area and a controlled explosion will take place.
“The cordon remains in place and we thank you for your patience.”
One local resident tweeted: “Not every day there’s a bomb disposal on the street.”
