TORY veteran Ken Clarke has said a small Conservative majority could stimulate and “deepen” the Brexit debate.

The Remain supporter insisted Britain is “going to have a very interesting Parliament” but claimed a hung parliament would be the worst possible outcome for the country.
While he was amazed at Theresa May's decision to call the snap election, Mr Clarke said it was “worthwhile” for the Tory leader to try and secure a stronger majority.

Speaking to the BBC he said if the Tories secure a small overall majority it will enable “some deeper debate on a lot of issues”, especially Brexit.
His comments come as exit polls predict the Tories to lose a staggering 17 seats in the General Election.
The joint BBC/Sky/ITV exit poll claims Britain is heading towards a hung parliament as Labour is set to gain an 30 seats.
The predictions will come as a blow to Mrs May who called the election in order to gain a stronger Tory mandate for Brexit.
However Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has disparaged the exit poll. He told the BBC that “exit polls have been wrong in the past”.

Mr Clarke, the former Conservative Chancellor encouraged more cross party discussion and less shouting slogans.
The Father of the House was quick to say he hopes “there will never be another referendum on anything ever again”.
The Lib Dems are set to increase their MPs in Parliament by five the exit poll claims.
